I began studying Korean four weeks ago by optimistically learning the sentence: \u201cPlease speak Korean very slowly.\u201d\u00a0 After putting in this time, one thing has become abundantly clear.\u00a0 As a result, I have learned a new sentence.\u00a0 This new sentence will be instrumental during my trip to Korea this fall.\u00a0 Here is my new sentence: \u201cI am very sorry; I do not speak Korean.\u201d\u00a0 After saying this, any Korean words I manage to cough up will\u00a0 be impressive.<\/p>\n

True story-<\/p>\n

Last week, I told someone at work that I was studying Korean.\u00a0 Now, keep in mind that for the prior three weeks I had been devoting a minimum of 30 minutes each night, often longer, studying Korean.\u00a0 She said to me, \u201cSay something in Korean.\u201d\u00a0 I paused for a moment and reached back deep into the recesses of my mind, trying to find the perfect word or phrase.\u00a0 Then I said, \u201cI can\u2019t think of anything.\u201d\u00a0 And this was true.\u00a0 I drew a blank.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t think of a single thing to say.<\/p>\n

Through the magic of Rosetta Stone, I have learned to say the following:<\/p>\n

Apple<\/p>\n

Doctor<\/p>\n

Bad (Actually my wife taught me that one.\u00a0 And, no, don\u2019t ask.)<\/p>\n

I am sure there\u2019s a method to the madness of Rosetta Stone, and I\u2019m in it to the end.\u00a0 However, so far I\u2019ve learned a lot about cats and dogs.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned how to say the basic colors, including the word for black.\u00a0 However, when I told my wife the word for black, she told me, yeah, that\u2019s one word for it, but everybody uses a different word.\u00a0 So that was a little irritating.\u00a0 I told her that I was going to be loyal to Rosetta Stone and use their word.\u00a0 She shrugged.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also learned a lot about, for some reason, eggs.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, I have decided that I will have a sentence ready for the next person who asks me to say something in Korean.\u00a0 It will be on the tip of my tongue.\u00a0 I’ll have it in the chamber ready to fire.\u00a0 I will tell them:\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cI am very sorry; I do not speak Korean.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
