I just kicked\na woman and her two young children out of the men\u2019s bathroom at the Fred Meyer\u2019s\nDepartment Store in downtown Portland. \nOnly\u2026 it wasn\u2019t the men\u2019s bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I\ncan\u2019t blame myself, I\u2019ll blame the store for its poor bathroom labeling practices.  (I should sue them.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s how the\nwhole thing went down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walk into\nthe Fred Meyers with my wife and promptly announce to her that I need to go hit\nthe can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I march\nupstairs to where the bathrooms are, and I see the \u201cMen\u201d sign.  I hit a hard right and push through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There,\nstanding smack dab in the middle of the bathroom is this short Latino woman\nwith a young child right next to her. \nAnother small child is just emerging from one of the stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to\nsay, she sees me and looks shocked.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m a little startled myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I say to her\nsomething to the effect of, \u201cHey, this is the men\u2019s bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She quickly\ngathers up her kids and marches for the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I\u2019m\na super sensitive guy, and I feel sorry for her embarrassing error, I say to\nher, \u201cIt\u2019s no big deal.  Don\u2019t worry\nabout it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This whole thing\nwould have gone unnoticed, but just then, my wife comes marching into the room,\nsees me and says, \u201cWhat are you doing in here?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(I feel compelled to note that I didn’t appreciate her accusatory tone, but I decided not to make an issue of it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reply to\nher, \u201cThis is the men\u2019s room.\u201d \n(Although, at this point, my confidence is beginning to wane.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all walk out,\nand to my great disappointment \u2013 Yes, as unbelievable as it was, someone had\nswitched the bathroom signs in the mere moments I was in the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
