Millions of years from now, archaeologists, perhaps from another planet, will be carefully digging through previously inhabited areas of Earth.\u00a0 They will be looking for artifacts to help them understand the nature of the human experience.\u00a0 During this process, they will discover thousands of little plastic bags containing organic matter.\u00a0 They will wonder to themselves, \u201cWhat was it about these little bags that was so important to humankind?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was thinking\nabout all this last weekend when I was out walking Milo the Dog.  As I pulled out a bag to collect his most\nrecent achievement, I wondered what an alien archaeologist might make out of\nall of this millions of years from now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three possibilities\ncame to mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Perhaps these\nwere snack bags.  We might have enjoyed\nsnacking on whatever these little bags contained.  In fact, we might have found this snack so\ntasty that we were addicted to it, and we carried it wherever we went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Perhaps these\nlittle bags had a deep religious meaning. \nWe were emotionally attached to them. \nThey helped us form a closer connection to our creator.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Perhaps the\ncontents of these bags had an intrinsic value, like gold or silver.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course,\nwith each of these possibilities, the alien archaeologists would be confused\nover why we kept tossing them in the dump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time\nthese archaeologically significant little bags are discovered, there is a good\nchance that they will be fossilized.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have several\nfossils displayed in my office.  My wife\nbrought them back from South Dakota.  My\nclients often admire them and make positive comments.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, as I watched Milo drop another gem onto a neighbor\u2019s manicured yard, I had to wonder.\u00a0 Will this one-day be displayed in some alien archaeologist\u2019s office?\u00a0 If so, I hope that visitors will admire it and make positive comments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
