One of my\nreaders recently asked me if I ever just made something up.  Whether I\u2019d written something that wasn\u2019t\ntrue \u2013 even outright lied<\/em>.  As you\ncan imagine, I was shocked.  l was deeply\noffended that anyone would feel the need to ask this.  Of course, I lie!  I lie in my columns all the time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except, I am\nNOT lying about this<\/em> story.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story is true.  COMPLETELY TRUE!  Go ahead and Google it if you don\u2019t believe me.  There is simply no need to lie when a man named Wim Hof is teaching a special method of breathing called (hold on to your hat) the Wim Hof Method Breathing (WHM, for short).  That\u2019s Wim in the picture above.  I stole it from his YouTube video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to\noversimplify it, but Wim Hof thinks it\u2019s healthy to deprive yourself of\noxygen.  According to Wim, calmly confronting\na stressful experience, like the feeling of oxygen deprivation, helps us decrease\nthe harmful effects of stress.  Among other\nthings, when we panic, our body releases harmful cortisol.  His breathing exercise helps us control our\nsense of panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was\nimmediately attracted to this exercise for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. I already\nknew how to breathe.  (Not to brag, but\nI\u2019m an exceptionally good breather.  I\u2019ve\nbeen complemented on my breathing.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. It was free.\u00a0 (I am, after all, from Alsea.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wim provides\ninstructions on his website, along with this ominous warning<\/em> \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNote that\nWHM breathing can affect motor control and, in rare cases, lead to loss of\nconsciousness. Always sit or lie down before practicing the techniques. Never\npractice while piloting a vehicle, or in or near bodies of water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that his warning does not say \u201cdriving a car,\u201d it says, \u201cpiloting a vehicle.\u201d  This is probably to make sure no one thinks that, while it might be dangerous to do this driving a car, it\u2019s perfectly permissible while flying a plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I must confess that I did violate the warning about doing this near a body of water.\u00a0 Call me a dare devil, but I\u2019ve pushed the envelope.\u00a0 I\u2019ve practiced this several times mere inches<\/em> from my morning coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHM involves breathing in and out quickly thirty times, then EXHALING and holding what little is left of your breath for a minute, then sucking in air and holding your breath for 15 seconds.  You repeat this two more times, except you hold your empty lungs for 90 seconds on the second two rounds.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s quite a rush.  I\u2019m not a recreational drug user, but I\u2019ve got to admit that each time I\u2019ve done it, I\u2019ve felt like a stone-cold crack cocaine addict.  It\u2019s a wild ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say drug dealers groom new customers using a technique called, \u201cThe first one\u2019s free.\u201d  Well, good news. When it comes to WHM, so is the second one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I only have\none question \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does \u201cpiloting a vehicle\u201d include operating an excavator?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
