Whether you\nthink the Democrats or the Republicans have gone off the deep end and are [insert\nyour choice: 1. Evil, 2. Insane, 3. Dumb as a Bunch of Rocks, 4. Commies, 5. Nazis,\nor, my favorite, 6. Shameless Jacka**es], please pause and take time to laugh at\nour THIRD<\/em> branch of government.  Why\nonly laugh at the hijinks of the executive and legislative branches, when you\ncan laugh at all three?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Case in point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the\nfirst one-million years of our republic, Supreme Court justices have worn plain,\nstandard issue, black robes.  Tasteful,\nyes, but lacking that special panache. \nThat ended<\/em> in 1995.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That year,\nthen Chief Justice William Rehnquist walked into the courtroom wearing four\ngold stripes on each of his sleeves.  I\nstole the photograph above from photographer Mark Wilson and Getty Images.  (If I\u2019m prosecuted for this, I\u2019ll claim some\nsort of journalist privilege, and as a backup plan \u2013 I\u2019ll pray it\u2019s only a\nmisdemeanor.)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did Chief\nJustice Rehnquist do this?  Where did he get\nsuch a notion?  Was it from his research\ninto Western European judicial traditions? \nWas it from a desire to inspire litigants as to the sacred role of the judiciary?  Not quite. \nAccording to Adam K. Raymond\u2019s article in the New York Intelligencer<\/em>,\n\u201cThe embellishments were inspired by the \u2018one worn by the Lord Chancellor in a\nlocal production of Gilbert and Sullivan\u2019s Iolanthe<\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, to be\nclear<\/em>, Rehnquist went out to see a local play.  At the play, the head of the most powerful\ncourt IN THE WORLD, decided that he liked the cut of the Lord Chancellor\u2019s jib,\nand the next morning he had his wife sew four gold bars on his sleeves.  The next time you hear the fancy legal term, \u201cjudicial\ndiscretion,\u201d this is what they\u2019re talking about.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, the BIG\nQUESTION?  Will our current Chief Justice\nJohn Roberts don the stripes when he enters the Senate chambers to preside over\nPresident Trump\u2019s impeachment?  Is he too\na fan of Gilbert and Sullivan?  Sadly, according\nto Adam Raymond\u2019s article, the answer is, \u201cno.\u201d \nBut Roberts has surprised us before! \nAfter all, he WAS the swing vote that upheld the constitutionality of\nObamacare.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absolutely\nANYTHING is possible!  For example, if\nyou\u2019re bored enough to watch the impeachment trial, and your mind begins to\nwander, you might keep yourself focused on the proceedings by speculating, what,\nif anything, is Roberts wearing under <\/em>his robe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
