I am a vocal\nadvocate for pedestrian rights.  I especially<\/em>\nsupport strong pedestrian rights laws.  Of\ncourse, this is only when I\u2019m walking.  When\nI\u2019m driving, people who make me stomp on my brakes as they exercise their\n\u201crights\u201d irritate me a little.  And by\n\u201cirritate me a little,\u201d I mean I\u2019d like to run them over.  Just kidding! \nI would never think of doing such a thing.  I really only want to nick them with my\nbumper.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me be clear, when I complain about having to stomp on my brakes for pedestrians, I am NOT concerned about wasting my money on the gas it takes to accelerate back up to speed.\u00a0 I am only <\/em>concerned about climate change.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two blocks from my office is the major thoroughfare of Oak Street.\u00a0 A couple of years ago, the city installed a well-marked crosswalk at Park and Oak.\u00a0 Here it is \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you see, there is no stoplight, or even a flashing yellow light, only the lines painted on the street.\u00a0 Just one block away is the intersection of 8th and Oak.\u00a0 It is what\u2019s called a \u201ccontrolled intersection.\u201d\u00a0 Lights, Walk signals \u2013 the whole shebang.\u00a0 You can see it just ahead \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are\nheading down Oak and see a green light just ahead, of course, you\u2019re trying to make\nit.  But not so fast, Bucko!  If just one jaunty pedestrian steps out on\nthe crosswalk at Park, all the drivers have to slam on their brakes and wait\nfor His or Her Highness to finish their (slow) crossing.  What kind of a megalomaniac would step out in\nfront of two lanes of cars trying to make the green light?  Well, me. \nLook, I\u2019m not saying I do this all the time, but it happens.  For example, when I walked over to take\npictures for this story, I waited for the traffic to pass before I stepped onto\nthe crosswalk.  But on the way back, I embraced\nmy \u201cpedestrians are better people than drivers\u201d attitude and stepped right out\nonto the crosswalk.  Ten to 12 cars hit\ntheir brakes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have, however,\nreflected on my ways.  I now believe that\nlaws that give pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks, causing countless\ndrivers to hit the brakes, are an injustice \u2013 to my wallet.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, here\u2019s my<\/em> Green New Deal.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure we can all agree that we must do everything in our power to reduce greenhouse gases.\u00a0 Preventing the burning of fossil fuels to accelerate after coming to a complete stop is one of them. Our lawmakers must immediately<\/em> repeal the law that gives pedestrians the right-of-way at crosswalks.\u00a0 We must do it for the planet.\u00a0 We must do it for our children.\u00a0 And we must do it for my wallet.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
