Nothing says modern medicine like listening to someone on the other side of a shared hospital room take a dump.\u00a0 Shared<\/em> hospital room?\u00a0 Two patients to a room? Really?\u00a0 Is it 1953 and no one told me? The only thing better than listening to the doctor tell you about your ailment, is enjoying the intimate details of the stranger lying six inches away from you.\u00a0 Thank goodness for that micro-thin plastic curtain providing you with the same level of privacy as the average Folsom Prison inmate.\u00a0 You know, with the open toilet next to the bunkbeds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I\nshouldn\u2019t be complaining.  Whenever we\nsee a news story of Ebola patients lined up like cord wood inside a Ugandan\n\u201chospital,\u201d there isn\u2019t a curtain in sight. \nThose folks would probably love a curtain.  On-the-other-hand, I\u2019m a fat, spoiled\nAmerican, so I\u2019ll resume my rant.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s bad enough that you’re in the hospital.\u00a0 Is it imperative that in addition to the physical suffering, the hospital heaps on the psychological pain of a shared room?\u00a0 Hey, maybe so.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a trained physician.\u00a0 Yes, I do use WebMD on a regular basis to diagnosis and treat myself and those unfortunate enough to be near me, but am I a BOARD certified medical doctor?\u00a0 No, not exactly<\/em>. (If you want to get all technical about it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are, of course, federal regulations concerning shared hospital rooms, and most hospitals attempt to comply.\u00a0 Currently, federal law requires that all hospitals that accept federal funding must have at least one private room for every 43,853 shared rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously,\nour system needs to improve.  There is one\nchange the US medical system could make that would immediately improve its\nquality of care.   This would be to adopt the most defining\naspect of the British medical system.  I\nam referring to the fact that the British do not use the article \u201cthe\u201d before\nsaying the word \u201chospital.\u201d  So, while we\nAmericans might say, \u201cWe took little Suzie to the hospital,\u201d the more enlighten\nBritish simply say, \u201cWe took little Suzie to hospital.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, I\nthink I\u2019ll implement this myself right now. \nHere is goes \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of\ncomplaining that, \u201cI am not looking forward to visiting my Uncle Bob in the\nshared room at the hospital,\u201d I will complain that, \u201cI am not looking forward\nto visiting my Uncle Bob in the shared room at hospital.\u201d  Wow!  I\nfeel better already. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
